Just a few months go I remember watching a debate on CNN about health care options, and was surprised at the criticism of our NHS. I know that it isn't perfect, but it's as near to that ideal as is possible. My knowledge of the US system is based on reading and listening to radio/TV etc. I get the distinct impression that it is for the monied class; definitely not the handicapped/poor/long term ill. .....If you became ill whist on a visit to the UK your health care would be free. Check that out if you do visit us. Best wishes. Sheffield, South Yorkshire.

Wow! Growing up in the UK I had always admired the U.S., from afar. My dream was to go there, to start a new life and escape the hum drum of a de-industrialising post imperial Britain. When I arrived in the U.S. I found there ARE so many things still to love about this great nation - its people, its achievements, its culture and underlying constitutional values. It breaks my heart to see the result of so much organised selfish individualism, such lack of social cohesion that flows from the top down m, and the division that has riven political discourse, as poor as it was to begin with there. What is portrayed as “Socialism in the States is nothing like it in Northern Europe. It’s just a deal between people, labour, society and capitalism that works for all. And it isn’t perfect. Healthcare provision in the UK has been continually neglected, but its place at the centre of what we identify with as a defining characteristic of our nation and our values is unassailable. And from that flows a form of imperfect social and cultural adhesion to the value of fairness, of not walking by and an intolerance for intolerance. As in America, that compromise and values are under attack from the populist hard right and extreme left across Europe. Hastened by a wilful denial of facts, and a social media echo chamber of self fulfilling unchallenged conflict belief preferences we are in danger of spiralling into the same dangerous division that both dominates and paralyses Congress from achieving anything substantive or remotely helpful for those in need, fir those still clinging to their dreams and yes, for those more fortunate who are able to see more clearly and do not subscribe to the necessity of unfettered individualism and corporate power that still masquerades as ‘freedom’.

---------------------------------------------------------- I was born at the end of the 50s and grew up in Frohnau in the French sector of Berlin (West), about 300m from the Wall. There were actually two different types of walling! Firstly the one that was supposed to stop the citizens of East Germany from coming to West Germany and then the other kind that affected Berlin (West). Because it was the citizens there who were actually walled in, because the wall went around the whole of Berlin (West)! Both inner German borders were called “anti-imperialist protective walls” by the East. This was supposedly intended to keep the “imperialist enemy” away. Only,… ... citizens from the West were allowed to visit the East, but not the other way around, people from the East to the West! As far as I know, there were never landmines on the Berlin border because people in the West could have been injured in the event of explosions. For the same reason, East German border guards were probably forbidden from shooting at refugees if projectiles could get across the border. Despite it: One of the last victims of the wall died only about 2.5km from our house. I deliberately always wrote “Berlin (West)” here because that was the official name! There are still endless stories to tell about the Wall, but that would go beyond the scope...

Alas its the mindset of a country where everything is orientated around corporate $$$ making, the American ME, ME mentality compared to the rest of the worlds WE, WE mentality. The USA pay taxes for Fire, Police and Utilities (Waste) yet brain washed by the lobby groups that the government running healthcare for its people is wrong and you should instead pay money to the lobby groups corporate sponsors who at a whim deny services for what your paying in excess for. What's different than paying into multiple pools for a private insurance companies to cover you if you need it or paying into a larger government run pool for universal healthcare that due to the pool size would be less costly for everyone.

I think the reason Americans don't stand up against this abuse is because we grew up with it, thinking it's normal because it's all we ever experienced. I was raised in a conservative military family with the idea that the US is the best nation on earth and blessed with wealth and power by God himself. While I still see it as being the biggest superpower, I now kind of hate what it's become. It's all about profiting from suffering, death, and misery. I want to return to Germany, not just to see my birthplace again but to find actual opportunities for a good life. It's clear that staying in this country means I'll never get to retire, and I'm already permanently priced out of a car. I'll be lucky to even afford a home with just one roommate anywhere in this country and very likely won't live to see my 70's.

As an aussie, I can't grasp the concept of your health insurance being tied to employment. Here, we take out our own private health insurance, which is not tied to employment. As long as you can afford the premiums, your covered. Many employers do offer insurance, as my company does, but if you lose your job, you just take out cover. Not to mention, we have a pretty reasonable public health system.

The thing my brain can’t cope with is the USA spends about a third of their healthcare money per person on administration, and spent about 3 times as much per person compared to the UK. So the USA spends as much on administration, as the UK does on the whole thing? I’m still thinking I’ve got that wrong somewhere.

Gorgeous video. I live in Leipzig and it's nice to get another prespective of my home. There is a lot to say. And if you ever want to see where "Hogan's Heroes" got its inspiration from: Colditz isn't that far away. Starting at arount 4:44 that is Leipzig. And the beautiful at the water at 3:32? That is Schloss Moritzburg. It is very famous here, because they used it to shoot "Drei Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel" (I don't know the English titel. Three hazelnuts for Cinderella maybe?", ater 50 year still a very popular movie here in Germany

Nationalism destroyed not only one of my home countries but both of them (I was born and raised in Austria and I am now a German national). In my youth, I watched my neighbor country tear itself apart. It is scary to watch all that bullshit in the media and thinking that it might happen again but this time in the US. And yes, nothing will ever change when people believe it is perfect already. And if you don't want to fall your country apart, your Goverment has to take way better care of your citizens. Better education instead of banning books, better working conditions and better health care. Otherwise the US will loose its edge in the long run and people will stop inventing things or getting new scientific developements.

Late to the party,, I know but I really feel for this young woman and it breaks my heart how troubled she is. She almost sounds like someone who was in a cult for a long time and finally realized that life doesn't have to be the way she was taught over and over again. I don't know what "the American dream" is even supposed to mean. Have enough money so you don't have to worry about health care and social stability and being able to afford a good education for your children? In the developed world, that is standard by now. Or does it mean earing more money than everyone else? What's the point of that? You need enough money to be able to afford the things you need and a few nice things you want to have. That's it. Everything else is just greed. Abd how can people who work in grocery stores or gas stations or waiters be unimportant? They are the ones keeping things running. But the most essential jobs are rarely be considered to be "important" bei snobby rich people ... until there is a shortage.

I have been working rolling shifts for 11 years now. Well, you can called and ask to cover a shift at times. But before you do that, you need to figure out if it is reasonable and the person you are calling still gets enough rest time. And then three things can happen: You can say no and then they have to figure out some other way or call another of your co-workers. You can say yes but then get off on a day you were originally scheduled for. Or if that wouldn't be possible, they have to pay you extra for your effords. Also "only 22 % of the women worked". Women always worked. But for much of history, they dodn't get payed at all for all the labour they did. It's not like all the housework, runnig errands, taking care of the children and organizing family life magically happend. That is hard work. And way more than 40 hours a week.

There is a giant misunderstanding every person employed or on benefits pays National Insurance that is how the government gets its money they don’t charge people actual extra taxation national insurance is a deduction from your wages or salary either weekly or monthly depending how your employer pays out you are given a national insurance number by applying for it that number is given to the hospital and your GP so they know you paid national insurance when you register and that is the way our healthcare system works

In the last 22 years iv had 4 Gastro life saving ops and 1 hart valve replavment and another valve pached all with top quality German titanium due to allergies. I also had a 5 month stay in hospital 10 weeks in a hart hospital iv had 9 nights in HDU and 2 weeks in intencive cair. 22 years ago i was put on a special feed drip in a bag that back then cost £1k a day that was for 6 weeks. Iv had so meny hospital ambulance rids the paramedics always asks how my dog is. To get home iv had a medical air matress, extra steps built at each outside door including patio doors and handels, a wheelchair. Special food drinks, all my years of great meds and they are deliverd, all my food, rehab, all sorts of scans including multiple MRI's. I had 6 consultants and a profesor save my life 4 times. District nurses take bloods every 2 weeks for 3 years, i have also normaly had a private room even in the private wing of the hart hospital and meny meny week long or 2-3 night stays. Now i dont want to show off (im Brittish i couldnt even if i tried) BUT I WOULD BE DIED IF I WAS AMERICAN.the NHS is amazing, i have had 10 Strokes in the last 2 months and the last 2xi went into A&E within 20mins i was starting tests with the Stroke nurse, so this idea of waiting ages is rubbish if its serious they will get to you extreamily quicly. The hostitaps are also spotless. O.K.its not all perfect there coffee is terrible and i dont drink tea but the Cadburrys hot chocolate is great and the fish and chips with mushy peas is very good. Because iv not beenablt to work for 22 years all, ALL this has realy been FREE. The NHS is the best thing the UK has ever done that and stopping slavery.
